Reverse osmosis (RO) is a water purification technology that uses a semipermeable
membrane to remove ions, molecules and larger particles from
drinking water. In reverse osmosis, an applied pressure is used to
overcome osmotic pressure, a colligative property, that is driven
by chemical potential differences of the solvent, a thermodynamic
parameter. Reverse osmosis can remove many types of dissolved and
suspended species from water, including bacteria, and is used in
both industrial processes and the production of potable water.

Safe Operation of Reverse Osmosis Desalination System
Although the operation of the RO system has proven reliable, there
may still be some reports of malfunctions. For example, improper
pretreatment of feed water, various operating parameters are not
controlled according to regulations, etc. Therefore, the reverse
operation of the reverse osmosis desalination system must pay
attention to the following issues:
(1) Regularly test SDI index. Excessive SDI will cause irreversible
contamination of the membrane module and shorten the service life
of the module.
(2) Control the recovery rate. The recovery rate is too high. On
the one hand, the component of insoluble salt is more than the
solubility product, forming scale. On the other hand, if the flow
rate of concentrated water in the module is too low, it is easy to
cause concentration polarization and cause scaling, which is not
conducive to the discharge of colloids and suspended solids in the
water.
(3) Pay attention to the pressure difference of the membrane
module. The initial differential pressure of the membrane module is
small. If the differential pressure increases rapidly, the membrane
module is contaminated or fouled, and the cause must be identified
and corrected.
(4) Pay attention to changes in water production and desalination
rate, which usually occur at the same time as changes in pressure
difference. If the water production and desalination rate change
significantly in a short period of time, it is necessary to check
whether the pretreatment system is operating normally, such as
whether the dosage is appropriate, whether the filter is leaking
and so on.
